Sažetak
Sveti Martin na Muri is situated in the northernmost part of Croatia, in the region of Međimurje. Its geographical position along the main routes connecting Pannonian plain with the Adriatic determined the importance of nowadays Sveti Martin from prehistoric times. Numerous archaeological excavations have been carried out since 1977. The most important and abundant finds date to the period of the Roman rule which identifies the site as a Roman settlement. Croatian Conservation Institute has been conducting the excavations since 2015. Primarily, the main goal was to determine the spread of the Roman site because of the legal protection of Sveti Martin as a part of Croatian Cultural Heritage. The project was financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and to some degree by the Municipality of Sveti Martin. To procure as much data as possible from the large area in question, geomagnetic and field surveys were carried out alongside with excavation of test trenches. Field survey was focused on the southeastern part of Sveti Martin, were large areas of arable land enabled the gathering of important data. The surface of approximately 6 ha was examined. Finds, mostly pottery, belong to different archaeological periods from Early Iron Age to the Early Modern Period. The central part of nowadays Sveti Martin, on the other hand, is densely covered with houses and adjoining courtyards and therefore unsuitable for such a survey. Here, a magnetic survey was undertaken on several small surfaces on the overall area of approximately 0, 9 ha (Eastern Atlas Gmbh)). Some indications of potentially ancient structures are evident in the magnetic data. On a slope in the northwestern part of the village, a large compound of furnaces was localized, suggesting the existence of remains of a Roman workshop. In the eastern and more elevated part of the village, some indications of solid structures, i.e., remains of ancient buildings, were detected.
