Sažetak
The popularity of television drama series as the locus of narrative and visual storytelling has been growing in recent years. In television series, narratives have become more complex and visual stories have achieved film-like artistic quality. As a result, they are both more impressive and more appealing to their audience. One advantage of storytelling in television drama series (when compared to movies) is that television series, whether seen in shorter time intervals as episodes or binge-watched at the preference of their viewers, provide a better opportunity for narrative flow to develop, take a turn and engage their viewers. A great number of television series have their faithful viewers ; they affect popular culture as well as reflect it. This paper uses Walter Fischer’s theory (on humans as ‘storytelling animals’) to explain the popularity of television series. Special attention is given to one recent example of a masterfully told story. Chernobyl is a very successful television drama mini-series with multiple levels. This paper focuses on its presentation of Soviet society and the depiction of nuclear energy as intrinsically evil. Special attention is also paid to character development and the role of scientific discourse in giving the narrative its real-like quality (verisimilitude). It will be argued that the story’s carefully crafted narrative (despite of its tenuous relationship to real events) is one of the main reasons for its popularity.
