Sažetak
Movie heroes and heroines mirror socio-cultural reality and changes, offer imitation models and form ideas on what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman. While fictional narrations throughout history depicted gender representation through stereotypical male-female relations (active heroes and passive heroines), the last two movie decades witness a change (e.g. Disney Princesses films research). As Disney movie fairy tales are hugely popular among children and youth, and media plays an important role in shaping gender identity and socialisation, authors set themselves an aim to analyse the content of 15 Disney feature film fairy tales of the 21. century (Around the World in 80 Days, Bridge to Terabithia, Enchanted, Narnia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Oz the Great and Powerful, Maleficent, Into the Woods, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Pete's Dragon, The BFG, Beauty and the Beast) to discover relationship between male and female characters, if they are evenly represented, stereotypically shown or characters' behavioural characteristics in the films are more egalitarian. To confirm or deny the main hypothesis stating that modern Disney movie fairy tales just seemingly propagate egalitarian view on male-female relationships and protagonists are more androgen than gender stereotypical, we will identify typically female and male characteristics ; typical female characteristics refer to tending to physical appearance, physically weak, submissive, emotional, affectionate, nurturing, sensible, insecure, troublesome, fearful, ashamed, crying, described as physically attractive. Typical male characteristics include curiosity, physical strength, being non-emotional, independent, practising martial arts, intellectual work, causing fear, being explorative, brave, physically attractive, leader and saviour. We will apply the Bechdel test on every movie with the hypothesis that action is derived from fixation on the protagonist being merely a reaction. Thus this paper will speak about the characteristics of modern heroes/heroines and their potential to redefine female and male characters.
