Sažetak
Works by old authors, especially those from the eras before the invention of the printing press, have mostly been preserved in trancripts for later generations, while original texts, manuscripts kept in authors' own handwriting—autographs, were extremely rare. As a result of these circumstances, the practice of preparing the so- called critical editions of works by particular authors developed a long time ago. The critical edition denotes an edition which takes into account all known, more or less different, manuscript and printed versions of the same text. The more these versions there are, the more demanding the job of preparing a critical edition usually is, both for the editor, who has to go through the long and painstaking process of constructing a text, and the user, particularly when readers are not familiar with scholarly editing. Whether a critical edition is based on few or, more often than not, a large number of versions, the production of such an edition always aims to establish a text which the editor, based on exterior and interior evidence, believes to be the closest to the original. Granted, Latin texts from the 16th century, the time when the new printing technology had already become commonplace in hundreds of European cities, no longer necessarily provided fertile ground for the proliferation of errors and emendations which were a result of copying manuscripts by hand, but one should also bear in mind that printed editions were nonetheless not immune to conscious or unconscious interventions into the writer's autograph. The advent of the printing press therefore by no means ended the need for the textual study of early modern works, the more so in that many of them circulated concurrently both in printing and in manuscript (not to mention texts which never reached the typesetter). The pedagogical workshop examined a Latin poem with political overtones from the beginning of the 16th century. Some of the basic principles of the preparation of a critical edition were cited and illustrated during a comparison between particular excerpts from both the manuscript and the impression of Ad Deum contra Thurcas oratio (A prayer to God against the Turks) by Franjo Trankvil Andreis (1490–1571). The printed version of the poem was published in Nuremberg (ca. 1515), when Trankvil was around 25 years old. It is kept in the Bavarian State Library (Res/4 P.o.lat. 750, 14). The manuscript version is part of the collection Varia Dalmatica (also known as Codex Lucianus), compiled in Trogir in the 16th and 17th century, in which Petar Lucić (ca. 1550–1614) and his son, the historian Ivan Lucić (1604–1679), copied around 300 shorter poetic and historical works primarily by Croatian humanists, written in the period between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 17th century. This collection is kept in the Scientific Library in Zadar (sign. 25290, ms. 617).
