Sažetak
As active news avoidance has never been higher (Reuters Institute, 2020), the news industry is struggling to win back their audiences. Focus on negativity in news is one of the main reasons people intentionally avoid it (Skovsgaard and Andersen, 2020). The foundations of the journalistic profession have been shaken up – how to make people like and trust the news - again? As a potential solution to this problem, the practice of solutions journalism in the United States and constructive journalism in Northern Europe has emerged and gained support. Both wish to select and present the news that sheds more light onto positive developments and ultimately provides a more accurate picture of the world. The BBC, “the most famous example of public service media” (Nielsen, 2017:36) has adopted its own form - the so-called solutions-focused journalism. BBC’s project People Fixing the World includes solutions video stories intended for primarily young audiences on digital and social platforms. The goal of this study is to examine how the BBC creates the necessary critical journalistic lens in stories about solutions to world’s problems. The main research question is: In what ways are problems and solutions presented and positioned in BBC’s video stories? This is important as it shows if and how journalists create space in solutions stories for their audiences to critically understand and evaluate solution effectiveness in relation to the problem. Qualitative content analysis of 119 BBC’s solutions video stories is combined with the narrative analysis of a smaller sample, and semi-structured interviews with two editors and seven journalists who produced them. Findings show that the problem is both textually and visually under-represented and decontextualized in relation to the solution, in journalists’ attempts to make the story simple and interesting. Main journalistic questions about the solution are left unanswered. This ultimately leaves little space for critical understanding and evaluation of the solution that is presented.
