Sažetak
Practical work provides a wide range of benefits for learning in chemistry. It includes exposing students to concrete experiences with objects and concepts mentioned in the classroom and allows connecting concrete, macroscopic observations to the abstract, representations and symbolizations used in science facilitating understanding of chemical concepts. Research-based laboratory is new direction for laboratory curriculum development is the integration of authentic science practice. In this approach, activities require students to collect, analyze and interpret data to answer to the research questions. The student data are collected at the end of the project and used to advance scientific research in the field. Furthermore, students are responsible to the larger project and their data may be used in publications and future work. The purpose of this small-scale research was to examine what impact the research-based activities had on the students affective experience including their opinions about learning and understanding compared to traditional laboratory. Data were collected using questionnaire based on the similar study and observational notes in a sample of a group of secondary school chemistry students aged 15-16 years. This study has been inspired by science projects "Candle Science" by National Candle Association. Results indicate that all students in this study liked research-based practical work. Students' reasons for claiming to like it are that research-based activities are fun, exciting, more believable and less boring than traditional laboratory. Furthermore, they consider it as a better way of learning about and understanding scientific ideas and concepts.
