Sažetak
Since the Danish architect Knud Haastrup (born 1930) first visited the Croatian medieval city of Dubrovnik as a student in 1960, the city has played a special role in his work as a town planner. This can especially be seen in the development plans for Avedøre Stationsby, Værløse Vest (which was never built), and Egebjerggård. Shortly after his trip to Dubrovnik, Haastrup began working at Skaarup and Jespersen’s drawing office, which handled town planning, and in the spring of 1962 he began work on the plans for Avedøre Stationsby (Avedøre Railway Station Town – a suburb of Hvidovre, Greater Copenhagen). Staff at the design office were greatly inspired by the urban planning debates of the time. For example, the debate generated by town planners like Gordon Cullen and Kevin Lynch, as well as the work being done for ‘New Towns’ in England. However, several of the most striking features of Avedøre Stationsby can also be traced directly back to Dubrovnik. This relates to the tripartite framing of the town, which would contribute positively to the town as experienced by providing clear demarcation lines for town boundaries, just as was the case with Dubrovnik’s city walls. The drawing office team also felt that Dubrovnik’s walls offered a good solution to a practical challenge: “All the town’s multistorey apartments were given direct views and access to open, green areas.” The clear demarcation between vehicular and pedestrian traffic (which was a popular feature at that time), and the particular concern shown for the comfort and safety of residents were also themes that the architects adopted from Dubrovnik in their work on Avedøre Stationsby. The lessons learned from Dubrovnik were not simply transitory elements of style, but fundamental town planning components that could be applied in a range of different contexts over very long periods of time. In this way, Dubrovnik formed the basis for a philosophy of town building per se.
