Sažetak
The rise of the novel as a literary genre in England coincided historically with the emergence of capitalism, and themes related to economic matters have been common over the history of the novel in English. This article examines examples of the use of the language of accounting or book-keeping in several novels from different periods in order to point out, albeit in a necessarily fragmentary way, a recurrent use of such discourse in novels in English, as well as specific historical and social questions attendant on the novelistic use of such discourse. The examined novels include Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone, Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49. In the discussion of the idiom of accounting the article focuses on the significance of the theme of economic rationality in the structure of the selected novels, which is often featured as an instrument of the protagonists’ efforts to make sense of the social worlds they inhabit.
