Sažetak
Two species of crested newts Triturus sp. are present in Croatia, the Danube crested newt T. dobrogicus (Kiritzescu, 1903) and the Italian crested newt Triturus carnifex (Laurenti, 1768). The range of the species meets in central Croatia where they hybridize with each other, thus making morphological determination unreliable. Field research in 2020 and 2021 investigated the presence of crested newts in Međimurje County. Crested newts were recorded for the first time in 8 new locations, which expanded their known range in Croatia. The research methodology included the use of Ortmann’s funnel traps, and all individuals were recorded by this method. Međimurje County is part of the hybridization zone, and due to the unreliability of determination, genetic methods were used to determine the species. The ND4 region of mitochondrial DNA and one region of nuclear DNA were amplified and then sequenced by PCR. The results of the analysis indicated the presence of both species, but it is very likely that hybrids were also found at certain localities. For the confirmation of potential hybrids and the type of hybridization, it is necessary to use a larger number of nuclear molecular markers (microsatellites) in future research. It is recommended that Ortmann’s funnel traps be used in further studies for their effectiveness and genetic methods for species determination in order to expand knowledge about the range and hybridization of crested newts and thus enhance their protection.
