Sažetak
Background and purpose: This paper analyses gender and educational inequalities in health by measuring self-assessed health status. Material and Methods: Health status was measured using SF-36 questionnaire. The study was conducted in Croatia during the period from 1997 to 1999, as a part of the project "Analysis of Transition of Healthcare System in Croatia". There were 5048 respondents (1983 males and 3065 females) aged 18 to 94. Results: As far as gender distinction is concerned, the results showed statistically significant difference in self assessed health. The women consistently considered themselves less healthy ; they scored significantly lower than men on all 8 scales. With reference to the socio-economic inequalities, one generally finds larger differences within the lower educational groups. However, in this study, the difference on VT and BP scale remained through all educational levels. Conclusion: The researches show differences in self-reported health among genders in various populations independently of other life circumstances. On the other side, there are some researches that did not show such differences. This finding suggests that the differences in self reported health among women and men are not only biological question but more social and public health issue. Croatia is among that group of countries in which differences in self reported health among women and men exist. There is a need for further research to explain what makes a health-related difference in gender in one society.
