Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to assess the afterlife of the religious ritual of veiling of sacred images by analysing several seventeenth- and early-eighteenth-century cases from the Adriatic region. Whereas much of the recent scholarly attention has been devoted to the medieval practices of activation of the holy images by their unveiling, a more nuanced understanding of the afterlife of these rituals is still at its beginnings. This particularly holds true for the post-medieval period in which the medieval sacred images obtained additional layers of meaning, such as that of antiquity or the status of the venerable prototype, both pointing to the enduring Christian identity of communities that honoured them. The present paper starts off with two rather simple, yet fundamental questions: when did the sacred images stopped being veiled and activated by unveiling ; and how did the post-medieval rituals concerning the “old” images replace the practices that evolved around them for centuries? By examining select cases from Zadar and Kotor, the paper will posit that the Early Modern period has assumed a rather peculiar approach: while abandoning the textiles as means of activation, the marble retables in which imagines antiquae were enshrined regularly retained the motive of animated curtains. The movement of the fabric, petrified in marble, meant to suggest the long history of interconnection of sacred images and textiles, in times when a radically different attitude of enshrinement of sacred images was introduced.
