Sažetak
Albergo diffuso (AD) is an innovative and sustainable business model proposed as a solution for low competitiveness of private accommodation sector in Croatia. Even though literature suggests numerous benefits of albergo diffuso, as of today, according to the Ministry of tourism, there are only two ADs registered in Croatia. This study aimed to explore the attitudes of rural vacation rental owners and determine what are the main obstacles to AD development. Authors used questionnaire as data collection method and descriptive statistics as a data analysis method. Survey was conducted online in October 2022, on a sample of 30 vacation rental owners from rural areas. Findings indicate that lack of trust and interest for cooperation, lack of knowledge and management competencies and lack of resources are perceived as the main obstacles. Additionally, many respondents expressed an opinion that AD is not a familiar model and that it should be more promoted by the authorities. To conclude, adopting innovative solutions in terms of diversifying the offer could increase the number of overnight stays and arrivals in rural areas. However, for that to happen there is a need to raise awareness and educate vacation rental owners about new business models’ features and management.
