Sažetak
Since the provisions of the First Croatian Catholic Congress (1900) were not implemented, the Bishop of Krk, Antun Mahnić (1896-1920), three years later, began single-handedly to implement the program of the Congress, so that today we consider him the founder of the Croatian Catholic movement. Mahnić was himself a native Slovene, but he emphasized that his ancestors had immigrated from Croatia and most of them called themselves Croats. In that context, it is interesting to mentoin, thet he advocated a state union of Croats and Slovenes. Before coming to Krk, he was active in the Slovenian public sphere, where he appeared not so much as a professor of New Testament at the theological college in Gorica, but already as a public worker, author of numerous theological and literary debates in Slovenian ecclesiastical and civic magazines, initiator, author and owner of the magazine Roman Catholic, founder of the publishing house Leonove družba and advocate of the anti-liberal orientation. When he was appointed Bishop of Krk in 1896, he already brought with him a firm and well-developed system of relations with liberalism from Slovenia, so he could actually only apply it to new situations in Croatia. The bishop followed the all ideological and cultural events and what shaped them, and came to the conclusion that the public life of the Croats faced similar problems as that of the Slovenia. We will present how Bishop Mahnić opposed modernist and liberal ideas and compare his reaction from Slovenian and Croatian period.
