Sažetak
Mitochondrial DNA functionally encodes important components of the oxidative phosphorylation process (OXPHOS), a metabolic pathway crucial for aerobic respiration. In this talk, we discuss various ways in which mitogenome information can be used in cattle breeding. In particular, we show how mitogenome information could be used: i) to identify ancient introgression, ii) to verify pedigrees, iii) to estimate the influence of the mitogenome on quantitative traits important for animal production, iv) to identify maternally inherited diseases, and v) to clarify complex phylogenetic ambiguities. We believe that our study will contribute to a more rational use of mitogenome information in cattle breeding and biodiversity management.
