Sažetak
Due to its ability to reflect the cultural zeitgeist, animation is one of the most interesting phenomena when analyzing a certain historical period. Franklin D. Roosevelt served as American president from 1933 until his death in 1945, leading the country through the periods of the Great Depression and World War II. The policies he initiated during this period often found an intriguing reflection in the American animation of the time. Although animation is often identified with entertainment and escapism only, this belief is misleading and inaccurate and its seemingly innocent nature has allowed it to become an ideal propagandist medium. The three most influential studios of the period were Walt Disney Studios, Fleischer Studios and Warner Brothers and this paper will focus on how the cartoons produced by these three studios reflected the American consciousness of this era. While cartoons of the twenties were imbued with a sense of anarchy and individualism, cartoons of the thirties display an entirely different tendency, inaugurating the codes of civic responsibility. From Disney’s Three Little Pigs to What Price Porky by Warner Brothers, American animation of the thirties supplies a valuable look into how historical circumstances have influenced and shaped one of the most popular mediums of the period.
