Sažetak
The paper traces the development of Disney's aesthetic and technological innovations and how, in the process, he also transformed American culture and became one of its most recognizable icons. Ever since he started his filmmaking career in the early twenties, Walt Disney has pushed the technological and aesthetic boundaries of animation. He created some of the most successful series of the twenties, closing the decade with Steamboat Willie, the landmark cartoon that signalled the end of the silent era and the beginning of the sound age, when the fusion of sound and image would be first successfully developed at his studio. The decade of the thirties is the period when Disney completely changed all the rules in animation, almost single-handedly reinventing the medium. He was the first producer who made films in the three-strip Technicolor, anticipating the glorious visual imagery of Hollywood live-action films and made the first drawn-animated feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The special emphasis of the paper will be on the imagery used in his films, which is an unusual fusion of pastoral American landscapes influenced by the period he spent with his family at a farm in Marceline, Missouri, and imagery influenced by some of the most vital European artists, mostly visible in his feature-length films. This dual American and European aspect of his films is one of the reasons why his films have a universal appeal and are today considered animation classics.
