Sažetak
The paper will use material evidence (mostly architectural and sculptural works), as well as available epigraphic sources to reinterpret the image of the local elites and their transformations based on the chosen case studies on the islands of the Northern Adriatic (Krk, Rab, Cres, Lošinj as well as the north of Pag) between the Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The paper will offer a heuristic definition of the local elites and will try to explore their cultural, religious and political affiliations based mostly on their investments in architecture and other forms of art – including their evergetic practices and funeral practices. It will take into account the cohesive elements that allow those islands to be studies as one unit – mostly their belonging to the presumed borders of the Late Antique bishoprics of Apsorus, Curicum and Arba, but also the differences in their historical development determined by their individual closeness to and dependence on the mainland. The paper will also try to reconstruct the image of the highest social circles in this area by comparisons with available materials from neighbouring regions (the rest of the territory of the ancient Liburnia to which they belonged as well as Regio Venetia and Histria) in order to include this material into a wider social context.
