Sažetak
The role of regions in national economies has changed significantly in recent times, due to at least two reasons: (a) globalization and (b) needs for structural adjustment in the view of ever changing economic environment. At the same time, the influence of the region (regional economics) in an increasingly decentralized economy is growing stronger in every way. The theoretical basis of regional development is closely connected to the theories of economic growth and, with that in mind, it is crucial for each regional and local organizational unit (urban or rural) to understand the role of regional economics in the new economic reality. In order to achieve this, we need to know the major theories of regional economics and add new value to this body of knowledge that is important in response to the new reality. Two main large groups of theories make up regional economics: (a) location theory, developed in the early 1900s, which deals with the economic mechanisms that distribute activities in space and (b) regional growth (and development) theory, which focuses on spatial aspects of economic growth and the territorial distribution of income. Historically, it is possible to identify several areas of theoretical dealing with regional growth: (a) the classic concept of regional development, (b) the concept of endogenous regional development and (c) the models of New Economic Geography. In this paper, we will first define what regional economics is, followed by an overview of the theoretical literature on regional economic growth. In the overview of regional development theory we start with conceptual foundations, moving onto classic works and, finally, recent developments in this field of science. In the conclusion we present a systematic representation of all theories and a perspective of a new theory based on competitive advantages and a new sustainable development paradigm.
