Sažetak
This paper presents preliminary research on the use of remotely piloted aircraft systems (drones) as airborne camera platforms by the leading national television and online media in the Republic of Croatia. Since the intention of this work is to cover a first step of understanding how widespread is the use of drones within Croatian media, for which purpose and how is it regulated on the national level, the analysis does not go as deep to discuss very important ethical and safety issues. The overview is based on the analysis of the limited public debate on the subject, semi- structured interviews with journalists, editors and new media department coordinators of three national televisions: two commercial – RTL and Nova TV, and public broadcaster HTV ; and three leading online media: 24sata, Jutarnji and Vecernji list. Furthermore, the national legal framework was analyzed and specific questions were answered by the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency. Paper does not offer comprehensive overview of the use of drones by the Croatian media, since the analysis does not include all relevant media in the country, but it is the first attempt trying to understand the reach and purpose of use of this new journalistic tool within the national media landscape.
