Sažetak
In Croatian, the auxiliary clitic can optionally be left unpronounced when inside a clitic cluster. In this chapter, the focus is on clitic clusters containing the indirect and direct-object clitics and the auxiliary clitic. In these categorially mixed clitic clusters, where the indirect-object and the direct-object clitic co-occur with the verbal clitic, the auxiliary has to be 3rd person to act as a candidate for drop. Moreover, the drop is conditional on the direct-object clitic being 1st or 2nd person. The optionality or even preference for the auxiliary being dropped then seems to interact with the Strong Person Case Constraint (PCC), a constraint on the combination of clitic pronouns with respect to their person (and case) feature values. This observation is supported by data collected in a large-scale experimental study with the aim of verifying the grammaticality of categorially mixed clitic clusters in native speakers of Croatian. The results of the study and the consequent theoretical account of the data offer new insight into the long standing issue of the status of the auxiliary clitic je, as well as corroborating and contributing to the expansion of recent research on PCC in Slavic languages, in particular with respect to Person Ordering Constraint.
