Sažetak
It is common knowledge recognized in the literature and everyday teaching practice likewise that students use a foreign language spontaneously and enhance their speaking skills when involved in drama and role-play activities. Hence, the methodological and pedagogical reasons for employing drama in the ELT classroom are plentiful. Different types of role-plays provide language in contextualized situations, which promotes meaningful language learning. The world of the classroom is extended to the outside world, since learners are required to use the language as a tool, in its original function, which prepares them for using the language instrumentally outside the classroom. In such simulations of real-life or imaginary situations students are less self- conscious about moving their bodies around the classroom and making mistakes while speaking, since they can express themselves more freely in a playful and uninhibited learning environment, all of which boosts their self-confidence and motivation for learning. Role-played situations invariably present an opportunity for smooth transition from language reception to language production and the efficient development of students’ speaking skills, as well as teamwork, social and communication skills. That being said, drama and role-play activities promote student- centered learning, and they cater for different learning styles, which makes the learning process more entertaining and enjoyable both for teachers and students. This hands-on workshop explores a myriad of activities to turn everyday classroom into a stage.
