Sažetak
Landscapes embody the cumulative impacts of human and non-human processes through time, necessitating interdisciplinary efforts to unravel their histories. In this paper, we use the concept of urbanization to structure an interdisciplinary approach to long-term landscape change along Croatia’s Adriatic Coast. Cities are a dominant factor in global environmental change today, but as a long-term process, urbanization has played a significant role in shaping our planet’s landscapes for millennia. Recognition of this point opens the door for ancient, historic, and more recent records to inform on contemporary urban/ecological issues while also generating cross-cultural knowledge about urbanism in a global context. We use a problem-oriented research design centered on the 3, 000-year-old city of Zadar and its near-shore island and coastal hinterland—areas of intense resource management and secondary urban development over the past several thousand years. Zadar remains an important social and economic center in the region today but one that faces significant urban/ecological challenges over the coming century. Although differences in temporal scales continue to pose challenges, the results of this work can inform on contemporary issues of sustainable development, resource management, and policy moving forward.
