Sažetak
This paper discusses the use and functions of the Illyrian ideological, cultural and linguistic programme in the Croatian National Revival. It presents the Croatian and European tradition that generated its main accents and especially the support it received in Slavic studies at the beginning of the 19th century, leading to the conclusion that Illyrian concept of identification was in many ways contradictory in the Croatian National Revival, as it had been in some earlier periods. Some of these contradictions are perceived as relevant in the present time and are one of the main reasons why the Croatian National Revival is also often interpreted as controversial.
