Sažetak
Retail, as an intermediary between producers and consumers, plays an important role in the national economy. Everything that happens in the world affects the development and progress of the retail industry on a high scale. Retail is one of the top five industries in the EU by indicators of contribution to overall employment, number of active companies, and its contribution to gross domestic product creation. It is a constitutive part of distributive trade and numerous indicators are collected and available in official statistics both on national and EU levels. Therefore, it is possible to apply various statistical methods to analyse and explain non-obvious structures and changes based on the available indicators. In this paper selected indicators are analysed by application of cluster analysis and chain indices (1) to explain the position of the Croatian retail industry among the newest EU members regarding the development and contribution of retail to distributive trade and (2) to describe how COVID- 19 pandemic influenced the retail industry in Croatia in recent years. Results suggest that retail in Croatia is similar to Slovenia according to its contribution to overall distributive trade in the country. On the other hand, analysis of change based on chain indices shows that COVID-19 pandemics differently influenced sub-segments of the retail industry.
