Sažetak
Ruby Sparks is an American romance film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Based on Zoe Kazan’s original screenplay, it stars her as the titular character and love interest of a struggling young novelist Calvin, played by Kazan’s real-life partner Paul Dano. Seemingly a rehashed love story that unsurprisingly went under the (commercial) radar despite Antonio Banderas and Annette Bening as members of the cast, the story of Ruby Sparks is in fact much more layered than its premise allows. In his effort to overcome the writer’s block after becoming a teenage success, twenty-something Calvin brings Ruby to life by writing about her. Initially a figment of his imagination and an idealized lover, Ruby’s personality and actions are entirely dependent on Calvin’s writing. As they navigate their real-life, everyday relationship, however, she increasingly develops independence. At times light-hearted and comedic, their conflicts eventually transpire as the ultimate quest for identity. A sparkly adaptation of the Pigmalion motif, the film explores the dichotomies of imagination and reality, the author and his work of fiction, as well as the issues of identity, romance, and relationship abuse.
