Sažetak
The challenge of bone tissue engineering is to develop bone scaffolds that allow a good integration with the surrounding tissues. Systems of particular interest are scaffolds based on calcium phosphates (CaP) due to its chemical and structural similarity to the inorganic matrix of natural bone and its excellent bioactivity. Growth factors have been used in the combination with CaP to enhance bone regeneration. This is a good example of adjusting the properties of synthetic materials to achieve goals. However, negative side effects such as ectopic or unwanted bone formation points out the questionable safety of their use. An alternative is a biomimetic approach, where various trace elements with a beneficial effect for bone formation are incorporated in CaPs. Biological apatite is multi-substituted with various trace elements crucial for bone growth and regeneration. Strontium (Sr2+), magnesium (Mg2+), zinc (Zn2+), selenium (SeO32-) and silver (Ag+) ions were substituted to CaPs. CaPs were obtained by wet precipitation method from cuttlefish bone in order to obtain a biomimetic multi-substituted system. The physiochemical and biological properties of obtained materials were analyzed. Further, the biomimetic approach of introducing trace elements in CaPs gains increasing scientific attention in recent years. To overcome disadvantages, such as poor mechanical properties, CaPs were combined with polymers (chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan) to obtain composite scaffolds for bone regeneration.
