Sažetak
It's widely known that Fyodor M. Dostoevsky is one of the greatest Russian novelists and thus his literary work has been the subject of research by many authors and under many different viewpoints. This paper discusses Dostoevsky from a different angle. That is to say, it reflects on and explores whether Dostoevsky is a philosopher or not and whether the thoughts we find in his novels, novellas and diaries are relevant to philosophy or not. Therefore, the focus is on the main themes of his thought that could be relevant to his entire philosophical thought. We have first explored his original method and way of reflecting on reality so as to be able to answer the questions which led us to investigate his philosophical thought. In this sense, analysing his thought, we have shown that N. Berdyaev is justified in describing Dostoevsky as a dialectician and the greatest Russian metaphysician, while explaining in what sense this is correct. We have then explored his anthropological thought and shown that man is at the centre of all his creative work. This leads us to the central philosophical theme of the entire oeuvre of Dostoevsky, namely the philosophical problem of freedom, discussed here from different aspects of examination. This also includes the question of how freedom relates to the problems of suffering and theodicy, which is so characteristic of Dostoevsky. Further discussion focuses on his philosophical reflections on Russia as well as on its role in relation to human society in general. Our research wraps up with an original and subtle reflection of Dostoevsky on beauty dialectically presented as something terrible and terrifying and at the same time as something that will save the world. Finally, the discussion ends with the conclusion that Fyodor M. Dostoevsky is indeed relevant to philosophy, and in a special way also to the history of philosophical thought in Russia.
