Sažetak
In the protection of metal-based objects, traditional, often toxic agents are still being used. They mostly provide short-term protection that must be renewed at relatively short intervals. Obviously, they should be replaced by other environment friendly compounds as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it is a huge challenge to find protection that both has excellent protective properties and is environment friendly. Fatty acids are carboxylic acids with aliphatic chains, which are known to have an affinity to anchor to metals and form so called self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). SAMs can provide a certain level of protection to the metal, but they are removed relatively easy from the surface. Crosslinking of an already well-ordered layer of molecules on the surface of a metal makes the film more resistant and can significantly extend its lifetime. Crosslinking reduces the penetration of external molecules into the coatings, while improving their functional properties. If the crosslinking is done using high energy ionizing irradiation rather than classical chemical procedures the whole process becomes environment friendly. The use of such coatings is non-toxic and completely safe both for the person applying the coating, as well as for the person handling the coated object. The properties of the crosslinked SAM coatings are influenced by many parameters, from preparation conditions to the types of molecules that are used. This work presents the protective properties of the different nano coatings developed. Acknowledgements: We thank the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ IP-2020-02-4344) for supporting this research.
