Sažetak
The domestic record production in the first post-war decades of the Federal Peoples’ Republic of Yugoslavia rested on Zagreb-based Jugoton factory, which started its operation in 1947. Continuing some of the pre-war record industry practices, one segment of Jugoton’s production relied on the releases of popular music by foreign authors. These releases represent a specific type of cultural transfers, which testify to the struggles of Yugoslavian “third-way” cultural politics and the state’s attempted re-definition during the early Cold War period. Given that the record industry offers an insight into the choices and policies balancing between market demand and socio-political context, the very selection of the produced foreign popular music in a socialist country can be revealing. Furthermore, the released foreign songs are often musically and textually mediated, i.e. re-arranged and translated, which can also be used as insight into negotiation of cultural influeces from both Eastern and Western bloc. At the same time, the record industry was being used for the re-definition of the youth-oriented cultural politics. Insight into the youth press and archival material showed signs of educational application of gramophone records (for example, in schools and clubs). This paper will therefore focus on various tensions concerning foreign popular music in the post-war Yugoslavia including the questions of acceptance of Western influences and control over the role of gramophone records in the lives of the young people.
