Sažetak
The use of symbols is usually of a great importance to those to whom they “belong”. It is a subjective, sometimes very emotional issue and their use is prone to cause sometimes even great disturbances in any given society. The use of both types of symbols is linked with strong impact of politics, emotions and identity issues. Problems that arise from the suppression and or incitement of their use are prone to provoke strife in a given society and even violence, as various research has shown. In the Republic of Crioatia legal regulation of symbols of national minorities and religious symbols is very different. Legal regulation of symbols of national minorities is rather detailed and strict. It is a product of political and historical reasons. The regulation is such that there should be no problem in its implementation, but this is not the case rather often. On the other hand, the legal regulation of use of religious symbols is practically non- existent. However, there is the case law of the Strasbourg and Luxembourg courts that is relevant for the Republic of Croatia as well, in their scope of competence.
