Sažetak
The authentic method of arithmetic division of the diameter of a circle by an inscribed hexagram – a geometric shape neglected for more than a century in the theory of architecture – or its concentric rotation is applied to examine the possibility of the systematic use of commensurate circles in defining the floor plan of an aisleless church. Organically starting from the sanctuary, the proportional system is overlaid with precisely surveyed examples from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. The final proportion of the nave floor plan of structures featuring an apse or short rectangular sanctuary corresponds to the grid of circles and/or hexagrams, the extended usage of discovered ad triangulum-based modulation of the value of the Vitruvian module, which decodes a design concept of Classical architecture regarding intercolumnar space and fenestration. Furthermore, geometrically determined values correspond to the articulation of the pre- Romanesque nave. A high degree of accuracy in the systematic application allows for an unusual paradigm: the probable existence of a continuous canonized use of elementary geometry down to the rigid design of a vernacular church, despite the lack of records relevant for mainstream scholarly research.
