Sažetak
The present master thesis explores and describes the phenomenon of language endangerment in the United States and Australia. The thesis examines the resemblance between the statistics regarding indigenous languages on the two continents. Throughout the thesis the British colonization is examined as one of the main influences on the linguistic situation in the US and Australia. The topic was chosen as the language endangerment continues in the globalized world of the 21st century, representing a great threat to a number of world's languages. Indigenous languages on the territories of the US and Australia are struggling to accomplish acknowledgment, and the undertakings to preserve and revitalize them have not produced satisfactory results. The English language has been replacing them in various aspects contributing to their further detriment, as globalization requires common means of communication. This thesis acknowledges the value of indigenous languages in the US and Australia based upon the cultural heritage that they carry for Native Americans and Australian Aboriginals.
