Sažetak
A series of short stories titled “The genius of Russian detection – I. D. Putilin”, written by Roman Lukich Antropov under the pseudonym of Roman Dobryj, emerged on the Russian literary scene at the beginning of 20th century and were immediately embraced by the reading public. As the title indicates, the stories celebrate Ivan Dmitrievich Putilin, a historical figure, who was appointed chief of Sankt Petersburg’s first department of detectives, when it was established in 1868. Putilin, nicknamed by his contemporaries “Russian Sherlock Holmes” for his resourcefulness and extraordinary insight, in Antropov’s fiction certainly resembles Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective in some of his methods. However, the aim of this paper is to trace the narrative elements and devices utilized in the stories not only to Sherlockiana, but to crime fiction phenomenon known as Pinkertonovschina, as well as to Edgar Allan Poe’s merging of gothic and detective elements, which resulted in a riveting blend half a century earlier, despite the essential difference between the genres. Apart from revealing these literary influences, the paper proposes that there are authentic Russian cultural aspects in Antropov’s fiction that intensify story immersion.
