Sažetak
This MA thesis deals with Paul Grice’s Cooperative principle, its conversational maxims and the flouting of these maxims. For the effective communication to be achieved, the speakers have to observe four conversational maxims by providing truthful, sufficient and relevant statement, which carries only literal meaning. However, very often these maxims tend to be violated and there are several ways of doing so, but in this paper the focus is on the case of flouting the maxims. This paper includes the study, that is, discourse analysis, which analyses the cases of flouting maxims in the comedy series Friends and Only Fools and Horses. This study aims to determine which of these comedy series tends to flout conversational maxims more frequently and which of the conversational maxims is most frequently flouted. It also examines the situations in which the flouting of maxims occurs, that is, the reasons for flouting the maxims. The study analysed nine episodes from both comedy series and found that there are slightly more cases of flouting maxims in the comedy series Friends and that the most flouted conversational maxim is the Maxim of Quality. Moreover, the main reason for flouting the maxims is to elicit laughter, but also to express irony, sarcasm, impatience, mockery and to change the subject or even to avoid the conversation.
