Sažetak
The intention is to give a novel look on the written evidence that is used to construct the historical metanarrative of the late antique and early medieval Eastern Adriatic. The approach borrows from the fundamental ideas of deconstructive literary analysis which is here understood as a means to detect and decipher various, even contradictory meanings of a literary text. Equally useful conceptual tool is the narratological analysis which scrutinizes the story that is seen as a meaningfully structured unity composed of events, characters and space in their dependency on chronology, causality, purpose and intentionality, as well as determined by the storyteller's discourse and the representation. The goal is not to inquire into the veracity of what is stated, or to try and discern facts from fiction as to provide firm points for a historical reconstruction. The principal aim is to identify the image of the Eastern Adriatic that is created in the select works of Late Antique and Early Medieval Latin and Greek writers. The select works are sifted through for information related to the Eastern Adriatic, with a view to define types of information and detect what interests the writers most about the region. The examination is conducted to discover the image of the Eastern Adriatic the writers construct and to identify their narrative strategies concerning the region, that is, to determine if the image is purposefully created and to establish the place accorded to the Eastern Adriatic in their narratives. The authors selected for this study are Jerome, Cassiodorus, Zosimos, Prokopios of Caesarea as well as Isidore of Seville, Paul the Deacon, and Constantine Porphyrogennetos.
