Sažetak
Radiation technology is a new green technology that has the potential to be used in metal corrosion protection, replacing traditional not- so-eco-friendly technologies. Fatty acids have self-assembling properties and an affinity for copper, thus, they form protective self-assembled molecular layers (SAMs) on the surface of copper. Despite many advantages, such as being easy to prepare and safe to work with or having non-toxic degradation products, SAMs’ main disadvantage is their easy removal from the metal surface. Using gamma irradiation, SAMs can be crosslinked to obtain polymer nano-coatings (PNCs) that are stronger, more durable, and more resistant to atmospheric conditions compared to SAMs. In this work, an unsaturated trans fatty acid, elaidic acid (EA), C18H34O2, was used to form SAMs on the copper surface and crosslinked using gamma irradiation. The aim of this work was to investigate the durability of protective properties of crosslinked and uncrosslinked SAMs of EA on copper.
