Sažetak
In the social welfare system of the Republic of Croatia, there is no official instrument that professionals working in social welfare system can use to comprehensively assess the phenomenological dimensions and types and intensity of problems in children's behavior. Existing, globally recognized, and validated instruments are usually not accessible to professionals in practice due to lack of financial resources. Also, information about phenomenology of children’s behavior is collected in an unsystematic manner and is not specific enough to tailor interventions to children’s needs. To fill these gaps, the team of the project A STEP FORWARD from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation, University of Zagreb has developed an instrument that can be used by professionals in social welfare system. The purpose of the developed instrument is that it can be used in social welfare system to assess the phenomenology of behavioral and emotional problems when children come into the social welfare system. Data from instrument can be used for a comprehensive assessment of children. The instrument was created based on a literature review and qualitative focus group analysis of the phenomenology of behavioral problems in childhood conducted with professionals from the Republic of Croatia. The instrument consists of 125 statements describing specific aspects of various behavioral and emotional problems and is intended as a self- report instrument for children aged 12 to 18 years. The aim of the validation study was to test the construct and criterion validity and determine the reliability of the instrument. Participants in the validation study were children included in social welfare system interventions. A total of 590 children from 95 Social Welfare Centers in Croatia were included in the study. The final version of the instrument is based on results of inter-item and item-total correlation, item variance, mean scores, internal consistency, and factor analysis. The preliminary results indicate that this instrument has satisfactory psychometric properties and can be used in the future to assess behavioral and emotional problems in children in the social welfare system.
