Sažetak
If it were not for the Slovenian blockade of Croatia's EU accession and challenging accession criteria, Croatia would have become an EU member state in a much shorter period. Croatia's journey to the EU was long delayed, but 22 years after its independence, the Republic of Croatia managed to become a member of the EU. The process of accession to the EU started in 2001 when Croatia signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement. Croatia officially became a member state in 2013. So, Croatia’s path to the EU lasted for more than a decade and carried a number of difficulties that prolonged it. Apart from the above-mentioned circumstances, there were other demanding conditions that prevented Croatia's rapid entry into the EU ; these include the need for cooperation with International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), high corruption records, and a dysfunctional judiciary system. Nevertheless, a little more than a decade after their first step was made toward the EU, Croatia achieved one of its main foreign policy goals and became a formal and legal part of the common European market and an adopter of the EU’s acquis.
