Sažetak
Studies in L2 acquisition suggest a lack of a variety of formulaic sequences as well as conjunctional adverbs in spontaneous speech. Researchers point out the necessity of teaching those units since they contribute to the coherence in speech, but also because they represent an important communicative means of the spoken language. From the standpoint of speech fluency, these lexical units are therefore one of the fundamental mechanisms in the development of fluent speech, providing not only coherence and cohesion, but also contributing to perceived fluency. Thus, research has emphasized the importance of explicit instruction of those lexical items with the aim of gradual automatization. This study aims at improving utterance fluency by an explicit formal instruction of nine highly frequent conjunctional adverbs in German as a foreign language. Also, various formulaic sequences for expressing one' s own opinion were introduced and actively practiced throughout a period of two months. It was expected that the explicit instruction combined with exercises promoting spontaneous speech would have an overall positive effect on the development of utterance and perceived fluency. In other words, the goal of the formal instruction was to achieve a certain amount of automatization of these lexical units and enhanced fluency in general (faster speech rate, less hesitations, etc.). A total of 10 second-year undergraduate students of German studies recorded their dialogues prior and after the intervention. The analysis of different elements pointed to a considerably higher frequency of the instructed elements, higher speech rate and a variety of turn taking formulaic sequences.
