Sažetak
There is little doubt that COVID-19 pandemic will have far-reaching consequences on people around the globe. It has affected almost every aspect of everyday life and people had to embrace new habits and adjust their behaviour accordingly. The changes were both radical and prompt. Yet, as much as lockdowns have limited movements of people worldwide, among few activities that were allowed during that period were those related to recreation. People need to move and to be engaged in physical exercises in order to remain healthy and to improve the quality of their lives. In terms of tourism, it can be argued that sport tourism offers numerous potentials when it comes to encouraging tourism exchange in the COVID and post-COVID circumstances. Therefore, the aims of this paper are: a) to analyse the reactions of governments to the pandemic in the context of sport activities, b) to analyse potentials of sport tourism as a special interest tourism which can enable participation of tourists in small groups engaged in outdoor activities, enabling epidemiological measures to be achieved, and c) to discuss potentials of continental Croatia in terms of more intensive development of sport tourism in order to reach new model of tourism development and to engage more suppliers of sport tourism services in that process. The research is based on extensive theoretical analysis related to the issue of sport tourism and its reaction to different crises, COVID-19 in particular. Current potentials of continental Croatia are elaborated through analysis of sport tourism potentials in this area and SWOT analysis is conducted. The results of this study provide basis for more intensive development of sport tourism within the area of continental Croatia, enabling sport tourism suppliers to reach new markets and to consequently enable overall development of this area.
