Sažetak
The alarming growth rate of femicides in Croatia in recent years has led to increasing expectations of the public in the prevention of femicides, but also in finding the causes of the increasingly frequent murders of women. Interest in the study of femicide in Croatia exists mostly only among organizations for women's rights, while state institutions and the academic community show no interest in studying this social problem. Croatian criminal law, which is also the case in other EU countries, does not recognize femicide as a male crime committed against women because they are women, or male hate crimes motivated by misogyny. Although the Ombudsperson for Gender Equality warns of a series of institutional and social problems that lead to an increased rate of femicide and violence against women in Croatia, the majority of discussions in the media and the public about femicide focus on individuals, which is also reflected in the statements of some politicians who talk about femicide as an "isolated case" or a "family tragedy" rather than a broader social problem. The silence of the still androcentric academic community, which is still largely reserved towards feminist theory and gender analysis, does not contribute to changing the perception of femicide as an "isolated case of deviant individuals". The aim of this paper is to show a representation of femicide in Croatian post-socialist society, whose institutions are influenced by patriarchal practices and a patriarchal understanding of gender roles. The paper states the reasons why femicide needs to be analyzed and studied from a feminist perspective, which sees patriarchy as the source of male dominance and privileges.
