Sažetak
Belief in Gods and supernatural powers seems to be a ubiquitous part of human societies and a pervasive feature of the human psyche spanning time and geographies. Such beliefs are often assumed to be the foundation of religions, which have, in turn, left an unmistakable impact on cultures worldwide and continue to influence human lives today. It is not strange then that supernatural and religious beliefs have occupied a large segment of academic scholarship throughout history. Some of the first prominent psychologists concerned with understanding personality have devoted a considerable amount of time to understanding religious motivations (i.e., James, 1985 [1902]). Recently, with the advent of cognitive and evolutionary approaches to understanding human behavior, the adaptationist lens has been cast on the origin of religious belief. Much of the recent work in the domain of evolutionary religious studies and the cognitive science of religion has focused on the propensity toward supernatural ideation and explaining how it can be viewed as potentially adaptive (i.e., Alcorta & Sosis, 2005) and innate (i.e., Barrett, 2012 ; Boyer, 2001). However, currently, one could say the verdict is still out whether and which cognitive underpinnings that enable our religious beliefs are adaptations and which are merely byproducts of a complex evolutionary landscape (i.e., Atran & Norenzayan, 2004 ; Kirkpatrick, 2005, this volume). However, intellectual effort in evolutionary religious studies has generally focused on human universals and mostly ignored individual differences in religiosity.
