Sažetak
Considering the fact that reading, either in a native (L1) or non-native (L2) language, has been one of the most researched areas in the world for the last four decades, it is not surprising why some of the Croatian researchers also tend to pay more attention to the related issues. Reading, contemporarily viewed as a multi-layered process which includes a variety of cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective approaches, does deserve to be studied, perhaps primarily from a psycholinguistic perspective. The individual differences of language learners, thus, become of a special interest, while the main emphasis is usually put on their strategic behaviour, which consequently requires efficient strategic patterns in the reading (teaching) practice. Almost ten years ago, the current presenter introduced an optional course Theory of L2 Reading within the doctor’s study programme of language (both L1 and L2) teaching methodology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, which drew much attention of the attendees to psycholinguistic insights into reading as such. Five dissertations have followed then, orientating younger Croatian researchers into this direction. Their results are being released in the remarkable publications and presented at some of the most important conferences in the world. Their crucial conclusions, including the ones made by the current presenter, will be surveyed in this presentation to show that our authors are surely knowledgeable about these issues and can unquestionably be put in the international context. However, the current presenter does not exclude the most relevant studies conducted by some other Croatian researchers, largely resulted from theses supervised by different scholars. Having insight into the aims, hypotheses, research questions, results and conclusions, it should become quite clear that reading is one of the constantly intriguing topics, studied with the help of mixed methodology, deeply rooted in the strategic process-oriented theoretical background, with the ultimate goal to change a perception about (efficient) reading and learning/teaching how to read in Croatia, and therefore, be even closer to the international mainstream when it comes to both L1 and L2 reading research.
