Sažetak
The basic historical information on Archbishop Rainer of Split are known from the Historia Salonitana, the narrative source by Thomas the Archdeacon. Among other things, Thomas also describes Rainer’s martyrdom, which will be the focus of my presentation. I will address his martyrdom in three-fold way: from the perspective of Rainer’s era, Thomas's interpretation of archbishop’s era, and the constat change in the relationship between the temporal and spiritual power (especially evident in the images of Gilbert’s of Limerick pyramidal hierarchy of society). Based on the results of such analyses I will make some remarks regarding the Church of Split at the end of the twelfth century.
