Sažetak
The rout of the Ottoman army during the second siege of Vienna in 1683 was followed by a great war of liberation under the auspices of the Holy League, which yielded Croatia a territorial eastward and southward expansion of 9, 809 mi². The total surface area of all free Croatian lands now amounted to 22, 471 mi², which was roughly the same size as the Medieval Kingdom of Croatia. Even though the triumphant outcomes of the Austro-Turkish wars of 1683-1699 and 1716-1718 made abundantly clear that the Military Frontier had lost its raison d'être as a defensive bulwark against the Ottoman Empire, the Imperial Court in Vienna was not in the least inclined to dissolve it. Instead it decided to expand. Why?
