Sažetak
Psychological rehabilitation of disabled veterans (amputees) during the integral rehabilitation process is important. The liaison psychiatric model is a paradigm of the holistic procedure. Due to multiple traumas, particular attention is paid to the impact of war trauma (with all its implications), amputation, and disability upon war veterans. The author simultaneously followed the reactions of the professional team at the Institute for Rehabilitation, whose members were not acquainted with the liaison approach before the war in Croatia. The liaison psychiatric approach has three major elements: 1. The understanding and recognition of psychological aspects connected with amputation and of defence mechanisms and coping. During the follow-up and clinical work it become evident that we mainly dealt with early defence mechanisms (projections, denial, splitting) with many problems in the process of mourning due to the loss of a body part (depression, episodes of anxiety, alcohol abuse, psychotic reactions, etc.) ; 2. The liaison psychiatric approach (individual and group treatment), complemented with pharmacotherapy when needed ; 3. Permanent education of the rehabilitation team and the work on sensitivity regarding the expected psychological and psychopathological reactions. This includes the supervision of the team and research on recognising the most frequent transference and countertransference problems. The liaison approach integrates the emotional intrapsychic with interpersonal reactions which influence both the course and the results of rehabilitation.
