Sažetak
Flood risk management schemes in the Republic of Croatia, which use nature-based solutions (NBS) together with engineering aspects on a larger scale, are located in the Danube River Basin in Croatia (the lower sections of the Sava, Mur, Drava and Danube rivers). These floodplains host exceptional examples of large natural retention areas, such as the internationally recognized Lonjsko polje, Kopački rit and Drava floodplains, that are subject to nature conservation measures. Current research and the European Commission link NBS with ecosystem services (ESS) and natural capital. Water-related ecosystem services are presented with an overview of ecosystem functions and services provided by floodplains. Example of ecosystem services (ESS) evaluation for some pilot areas in these floodplains are given, such as wood production, flood mitigation and habitat provision. Although the instrument of payment for ecosystem services (PES) is not yet fully recognized and implemented in water management in Croatia, some PES -like schemes between water and forest related services can be determined in the existing legislation, but also in internationally and nationally funded projects and programs.
