Sažetak
This thesis is based on the theory of theatrical improvisation and the structure, forms and techniques of improvisational theater to highlight the benefits of using improvisational techniques in English language teaching. Based on numerous studies that connect improvisational techniques with the development of personality, interpersonal skills, linguistic skills, real life communication and modifying public speaking anxiety, this research focuses on applied improvisation in foreign language instruction. The use of improvisational theatre in education has many benefits for students, but also for teachers. Despite the awareness of how beneficial improvisation is, improvisational techniques are not sufficiently recognized or trained in formal English language instruction. As is shown here, improvisational techniques can be an instructional remedy in English language teaching. My thesis organizes concrete examples of improvisational exercises and games as well as their descriptions and aims around the categorization of the specific issues in the English language classroom: games and exercises for practicing and expanding vocabulary, for practicing pronunciation and intonation, for practicing grammar, for developing reading and writing skills, and for communication and real-life application.
