Sažetak
The autochthonous Liburni, Iapodes and Ditiones were neighbouring pre-Roman populations, each with their own particular historical development, culture and religion, which in the end, after the Roman expansion, were incorporated in the province of Dalmatia. These societies relied heavily on a diverse and vibrant trade, both in pre-Roman and Roman times. However, for such a trade there was one great hindrance and that was the Velebit mountain range. Namely, Velebit was (and still is) a unique space of communication and division, which marked the lives of these societies and forced them to find ways over and around the mountain in such a way tracing the first well-trodden paths and later-on Roman roads. Therefore, in this paper we shall present the development of these three autochthonous societies, the roads they used in trade and communication, with special focus on the areas where all three connected and interacted as well as the role southern Velebit played in that. We shall also consider the epigraphic and other material sources and finds attesting to such interaction and in the end discuss how this affected their cultural development both in pre-Roman and Roman times.
