Sažetak
Despite the changed socioeconomic circumstances in the first place, weddings are still regarded as one of the most important life-cycle customs both in Zagreb and in the whole of Croatia. Indeed, it is the ritual upon which modern individuals spend the largest amounts of time, energy, and money. A great deal of attention is paid to the celebratory part of the ritual sequences, and therefore to the selection of music and musicians who are regarded as one of the most important factors contributing to a successful, memorable wedding event, and play significant role both on structural and symbolic level. As obvious as this assertion may appear at the first glance, the rich data following from ethnographic research with musicians and other participants in this specific ritual context reveals layered perspectives. The questions that arise in particular concern selection and role of music and musicians in wedding celebration: how are music and musicians chosen for the wedding and what factors impact this decision? How do musicians use and manipulate music in ritual context? In which way they conceive their repertoires and how are these repertoires negotiated at the spot? What kinds of repertoire do they play, what are the characteristics of this music and do they genuinely enjoy performing it? What skills should they obtain to satisfy and meet the expectations of their hirers and what are generally conditions of their work? Answering these questions, besides demonstrating the relevance and multitude of roles music and musicians play in wedding context, I will also provide an insight into the portion of layered meanings and webs of significance this ritual context is abundant with.
